Here the employer may be looking to see how proactive and career minded you are. Did you just have a bit of a break? Go on an extended holiday? Or were you proactive and did something positive such as go on a training course and attain additional qualifications? Did you volunteer to gain more hands-on experience in a relevant job?
Even if there were some personal or medical situation or condition that entailed you having to stop work for a while try to show a positive side. For example, did you study or volunteer to help others?
It helps if you can put yourself in the shoes of the interviewer - what would you yourself like to hear from a candidate?
